Message from the Chief Executive
G'day. For the last couple of years we've been taking delivery of our new generation bus fleet.
They come under a 10-year contract for over 300 units with a global supplier Scania, who work in partnership with Bustech, a local manufacturer.
This is one of them and on the outside they look similar to what we've delivered for a number of years, but you'll see appearing on this fleet now something different - a green chevron - and these markings signify the introduction of a new proven technology, because these are hybrid buses.
When the driver takes the foot off the accelerator this new technology kicks in to generate electric energy as the bus decelerates and slows to a stop. It's stored in a battery which powers an electric motor, which will accelerate the bus back up to about 30 or 40 kilometers an hour, before the diesel engine kicks in. That results in a tremendous reduction in the amount of emissions and saves over 25 percent in fuel consumption - but it's also producing a smoother and quieter ride for our customers.
Five of these buses are in service already and another 17 are coming next year when we launch extra school bus services. But the technology doesn't stop there because something else creative going on inside.
Buses are now being fitted with a new sort of motion sensor technology system that links back to this indicator here on the dashboard. It's giving a red/amber/green signal in real time about ride smoothness, which is helping the drivers to develop their skills and give our customers a more comfortable ride.
The team behind the bus supply contract have thought through carefully the sort of framework that they need to help adopt new technology as it emerges, and to deliver better outcomes. It's an approach we need to take in every part of our business now, and as you can see here, in a short couple of years, it's delivering real and practical benefits.
Golden Grove intersection open
As part of Stage Two of the Golden Grove Road Upgrade Project, the intersection of Golden Grove Road, the Grove Way and Yatala Vale Road is now open to traffic with a newly installed dedicated bus lane for right turns from The Grove Way approach and second through lanes on both Golden Grove Road approaches.
With only some minor finishing works to go, this project is ahead of schedule despite weather constraints and a site shutdown due to COVID-19. This has been a great effort by the project team and South Australian based contractor Civil & Allied Technical Construction Pty Ltd.
Our Executive Director Transport Project Delivery, Jon Whelan, was very pleased to see a LinkedIn post quoting a letter thanking members of a Bardavcol roadworks crew on the Lincoln Highway who recently saved a Port Lincoln family’s holiday plans.
The family was heading to Spear Creek near Port Augusta when their vehicle’s engine ignited while going through the roadworks site. Quick work by team members extinguished the fire before one of the crew took the family, with the caravan hooked up, back to Whyalla where their vehicle was also taken for repair. In two days their holiday resumed.
“Our contractors represent us and are essentially extensions of the department. Just as we expect and promote safe work practices on their sites, goodwill and going the extra mile such as this reflects very well on the department,” Jon said.

Rapid response recognised
I was delighted to read an email congratulating our Portrush and Magill Road Community Engagement team for the speed and sincerity of their response to an on-site access problem and the priority given by the contractors, when alerted, to fix the issue.
The correspondent had seen someone in a wheelchair having difficulty traversing a path adjacent to the worksite and contacted DIT Customer Relations, who informed the contractors involved.
“I had received a response from the intersection team who immediately swung into action, adjusting ramps to reduce steepness of slopes and assessing the footpaths. I also received a further update later that same day”. It was a Saturday afternoon.
Excellent work from the Community Engagement team and the contractor.
10 years of InfoCentre service
The Adelaide Metro InfoCentre at the Adelaide Railway Station has its tenth anniversary tomorrow.
The InfoCentre is our flagship location and has been a prime source of public transport information for our customers since it opened.
In the past 10 years it has had 3 million visitors, almost 2 million counter transactions and $24 million taken in revenue.
Its success and smooth running is a credit to the entire Customer Care team, who divide their shifts between the InfoCentre and the Adelaide Metro InfoLine.

Today's hybrid buses are dramatically different to electric bus attempts of the 1950s, as today’s Friday Flashback shows. This trolley bus is halted at the intersection of Hindley and Morphett Streets while electric cables are adjusted, in 1951.
