Bakewell Underpass

Bakewell underpass at night

The 80 year old Bakewell Bridge was nearing the end of its structural life and was becoming increasingly costly to maintain and repair. It was demolished in 2006 to make way for a new underpass. An underpass at the Henley Beach Road and James Congdon Drive junction was chose to replace the bridge as it provides strong visual and physical connections between the Park Lands and the urban area and improves pedestrian and cyclist access.  The decision to replace the bridge with an underpass was based on information collected from the community, as well as technical and economic factors.

The new Bakewell Underpass opened to traffic on 13 January 2008 providing a link between the western suburbs and the city.
