Flinders Link Project
The Australian and South Australian Governments jointly funded the $141 million Flinders Link Project to extend the Tonsley rail line to the Flinders health and education precincts.
The project included:
- A 650-metre extension of the Tonsley rail line, including an elevated single track over Sturt Road, Laffers Triangle and Main South Road, linking Flinders Medical Centre and Flinders University to the passenger rail network;
- Construction of the new Flinders and Tonsley Railway Stations; and,
- An integrated shared pedestrian/cycle path adjacent the rail line from the new ramp located at the corner of Sturt Road and Birch Crescent to the new Flinders Station.
The new Flinders train line and new Tonsley and Flinders Railway Stations are now open.
The new Flinders train line and new Tonsley and Flinders Railway Stations opened for passenger services from first service Tuesday 29 December, and is now operating under an enhanced timetable, developed after extensive consultation.
Features of the new line and stations include:
- services until late on weeknights
- a 20-minute frequency during peak times on weekdays
- a 30-minute frequency at all other times.
- better station access through Shared Use Paths and Activated Pedestrian Crossings
- new station locations providing increased access for more residents
- improved safety, security and customer satisfaction amenities.

New Tonsley Railway Station FAQ's
Tip: tap each question to expand or collapse its answer.Where will the new Tonsley Railway Station be located?
The new Tonsley Railway Station will be located just south of Alawoona Avenue. Why was this location chosen for the new Tonsley Station?
The location of the new Tonsley Railway Station was decided based on extensive community consultation, safety, technical and engineering requirements.Extensive consideration was given to the station location, including allowing for construction of a 160 metre long platform, the Department of Infrastructure and Transports rail engineering standards for track, station and overhead wiring and the modifications which would be required as part of the Flinders Link Project.
When will the new Tonsley Railway Station open?
Passenger services are expected to commence in late 2020.What will be happening to Clovelly Park Station?
The existing Clovelly Park Railway Station will be decommissioned.Where will the pedestrian crossings be located?
Three Activated Pedestrian Crossings will be constructed which all allow for disability access:- Replacement of the existing Passive Pedestrian Crossing at the level crossing (north side of Alawoona Avenue), with an Active Pedestrian Crossing.
- Construction of a new Active Pedestrian Crossing on the south side of Alawoona Avenue, at the northern end of the platform.
- Construction of a new Active Pedestrian Crossing south of the platform aligning with Handley Avenue.
How was community feedback incorporated in the design of the new Tonsley Railway Station?
After considering the community priorities, the technical constraints and due to the Tonsley Railway Station being unable to remain in its previous location, the following has been decided:- The station will be located as far south as possible taking into consideration the engineering constraints associated with the track alignment, construction of a new single 160 metre long platform on the eastern side of the railway line, DIT’s rail engineering standards for track, station and overhead wiring and the modifications which would be required as part of the Flinders Link Project.
- Station connectivity includes the southern pedestrian crossing point which has moved further south for access to the station for residents in Mitchell Park.
- Three Activated Pedestrian Crossings will be constructed, two on either side of Alawoona Avenue and one further south of the station, aligning with Handley Avenue.
- Flinders Greenway - worked with City of Marion and Renewal SA to see the delivery of a Shared Use Path and associated landscaping to enhance accessibility, amenity and use of active modes of transportation within, as well as to and from the precinct and the station.
What smart technology will be utilised at the station?
Community feedback highlighted a desire for electronic signage and adequate signage. The station will be fitted with information displays and accessible messaging technologies to provide real time train timetable information. The station lighting will be high efficiency LED lighting with programmable lighting profiles which minimise energy use while maintaining light levels to the required standard. Light levels are reduced from last train service until first train service to further reduce energy use. Local sensors return the light levels to normal if movement occurs within the station area. The station lighting is remotely accessible for diagnostics and programming purposes. What amenities and connectivity will be at new Tonsley Railway Station?
Improvements to amenity and access through infrastructure, such as footpaths, were raised as part of the community consultation. Based on community feedback, enhanced walking and cycling connections, lighting, seating, signage and passenger information to enhance accessibility and use have also being incorporated into the design of the new Tonsley Railway Station. Will there be adequate lighting and Closed Circuit Television cameras installed at the station?
Yes, lighting and Closed Circuit Television cameras will be installed at the station. Will there be shelter at the station?
The station will be fitted with two shelters central to the platform. What will landscaping be as part of the final design?
The City of Marion, in partnership with Renewal SA, is planning for implementation of a new Greenway in the 2020-2021 financial year. The project has been funded by the City of Marion, Renewal SA and the Department of Infrastructure and Transport and will see the delivery of a Shared Use Path and associated landscaping to enhance accessibility, amenity and use of active modes of transportation within, as well as to and from the precinct. For further information regarding the new Greenway please visit: https://www.makingmarion.com.au/flinders-greenwayWhat vegetation is being removed to allow for construction of the new Tonsley Railway Station?
A small amount of vegetation removal will be required on the verge adjacent the intersection of Woodland Road and Handley Avenue to allow for construction of the southern Active Pedestrian Crossing. Offset planting will occur in the same location to complete the works. Some other minor removal will be required at the northern end of Handley Avenue for services installation. All efforts will be made to reduce impacts to vegetation as much as practically possible.
Will there be any car parking at new Tonsley Railway Station?
