Adelaide to Crafers Highway Route Information
Mt Barker Road traces 160 years back to the early history of Adelaide when it was a bullock track for pioneer farmers bringing their produce to Adelaide. The road alignment, despite cosmetic changes, has not changed significantly since then.
The total length of route improvement under the Adelaide Crafers Project is 8.3km, which is 2.1km shorter than the old route.
Key elements of the new route are
A new highway corridor from Devils Elbow
- running east of the previous route through the Heysen Tunnels beneath Eagle On the Hill
- then west of the previous route for about 2km
- then following the old road alignment, but at a substantially lower level, for about 1.4km to link with the existing South Eastern Freeway at the Crafers Interchange
- with new bridge at Measdays near Crafers West providing safe and easy access to the existing Mt Barker Road
- new Devils Elbow interchange providing access to the existing Mt Barker Road.
Upgrade of the old Highway from Glen Osmond to the Devils Elbow
- an interchange at Mt Osmond Road with overpass providing safe access from Mt Osmond Road onto the Highway
- additional traffic lanes
- median barriers
- carriageway re-alignment.
Improvements to the intersection of Glen Osmond, Portrush, Cross and Mt Barker Roads
- improving traffic flow and relieve congestion
- rebuilding the entire intersection with all four approaches widened
- rebuilding the walls for St Paul’s Retreat, Birksgate Estate, Carmelite Nuns’ Convent, St Saviour’s Church and the Colonial Function Centre
- creating a strong visual gateway to Adelaide through the incorporation of artworks at the intersection.
