Curtis Road Level Crossing Removal

We are removing the Curtis Road level crossing to improve safety and reduce congestion - helping to get people home faster and safer.

Benefits

No more waiting at busy boom gates

Improved liveability

Less time waiting in peak hour traffic

Making your journey safer and more reliable

The Australian and South Australian governments have jointly (50:50) funded $250 million to remove the level crossing at Curtis Road, Munno Para.

Approximately 21, 000 vehicles (including commercial vehicles) travel through the Curtis Road level crossing every day and during peak periods the boom gates can be down for up to 15 minutes. Between 3pm to 6pm, the boom gates can be down for 10 minutes per hour on average, while between 7am to 9am, the boom gates are down on average for nine minutes per hour.

The removal of the rail level crossing and grade separation will improve safety and travel time reliability by reducing road and rail network conflicts.

The northern regions of Adelaide are projected to be our fastest growing in the next 30 years, accounting for 40% of Greater Adelaide’s projected population growth. Significant growth like this needs investment in infrastructure, particularly for important links like Curtis Road, which provides a vital connection between east and west and towards the North-South Corridor.

These works will support the significant growth in the region. Access from residential areas to the Northern Expressway and Main North Road is essential for people to access employment, education and recreational services.

Project timing

A planning study for these works will commence soon and a concept design is expected to be released for community consultation in 2026. Major works will commence by 2027, with an expected completion in 2030.

How this affects you

Removing the Curtis Road level crossing will:

  • make journeys safer and more reliable for everyone
  • improve safety for local residents, motorists, pedestrians and cyclists
  • eliminate waiting times at busy boom gates
  • provide better connectivity for general traffic, public transport, and cycling between district centres, which is critical to support growth, liveability, and equity in this fast-growing region
  • improve travel time reliability and time spent waiting in traffic
  • provide smoother and safer trips for all, including cyclists and pedestrians
