Grange Road Level Crossing Safety and Access Survey

As part of the South Australian Government’s commitment to road and rail safety, the Department for Infrastructure and Transport (the Department) is working to improve safety, access and traffic flow at the Grange Road, Hawthorn level crossing.

In the last four years (2019 to 2023) there were 49 incidents reported to the Department involving vehicles (including buses) queuing across the level crossing, entering the level crossing, or colliding with a boom gate, when a train is approaching. The Department is investigating options including installing traffic signals to improve safety and access in the area.

What’s happening

We sought feedback from the community and key stakeholders to better understand local experiences at the Grange Road, Hawthorn Level Crossing, including how people move through the area as a motorist, pedestrian, cyclist or public transport commuter.

Feedback and local insights will help inform planning to improve safety and access in the area.

Community Engagement

The engagement process commenced in June 2024 and concluded in July 2024. Thankyou you to all who provided feedback during this period. A total of 99 survey responses and other feedback was received during this consultation period which included an online survey with an interactive comments map, two community drop-in sessions and written submissions.

Next Steps

We are reviewing feedback from the community and key stakeholders to help inform our planning and to identify the most suitable opportunities to improve safety and access at the crossing.
