Long Valley Road Improvement Works

About the project

The Department for Infrastructure and Transport (the Department) is continuing to improve safety for all road users on Long Valley Road, between Wistow and Strathalbyn. As part of the $144.5 million Regional Road Infrastructure Stimulus Package this package of works is jointly funded by the Australian and South Australian governments (80:20).

Long Valley Road is a key transport route which connects Strathalbyn to Mount Barker and the South Eastern Freeway and Adelaide. The project aims to improve safety for all road users and reduce the risk of serious and fatal injury crashes.

Four key junctions on Long Valley Road between Wistow and Strathalbyn, will be upgraded, at Bonython Road, Treutler Road, Pursell Road, and Archer Hill Road.  These works are expected to commence on Monday, 10 January 2022, and be complete in mid 2022.

Improvements will include:

  • installation of turning lanes at the junctions with Treutler, Bonython and Archer Hill roads;
  • installation of a sheltered left and right turn lane at the junction with Pursell Road;
  • road widening;
  • safety barrier installation;
  • sight distance improvements at all junction approaches; and
  • drainage and services works.

In addition, a new southbound overtaking lane on Long Valley Road, from the railway line to Gemmell Road, will be constructed as part of the South Australian Rural Roads Safety Package. These $5.4 million works will also include two additional junction upgrades on Long Valley Road at Stirling Hill Road and Gemmell Road. These works are expected to commence early 2022, and be complete late 2022, weather permitting.

The Department appreciates your cooperation and patience while these important works are undertaken.

What’s next?

The junction upgrade works at Bonython Road, Treutler Road, Pursell Road, and Archer Hill Road are expected to commence on Monday, 10 January 2022, and be complete in mid 2022. The works will be undertaken from 7am to 6pm, with some weekend works as required.

To safely undertake these works, speed and lane restrictions will be in place during the works. Please plan ahead, allow extra travel time and take extra care when workers are on site. Observe speed limits, lane restrictions and traffic controllers when travelling through the area.

There is no change to public transport services, and arrangements have been made with local emergency services to allow access in the event of an emergency. Where required, signage will be in place to direct pedestrians and cyclists to alternative access and/or detours. Every effort will be made to minimise impacts to the community.

Access to properties will be maintained throughout the works wherever possible, with advance notice provided if there is a need to temporarily restrict driveway access. Some noise disturbance can be expected at times while these works are completed, however the work will be managed to minimise disturbance to nearby residents and businesses as much as practically possible.
