About the project
Main South Road, the Southern Expressway and Victor Harbor Road provide access to many facilities located south of Adelaide including Adelaide’s southern beaches, McLaren Vale wine region, Kangaroo Island (via the port at Cape Jervis) and the wider Fleurieu Peninsula.
The section of Main South Road that connects the Southern Expressway, Old Noarlunga to the newly duplicated sections at Victor Harbor Road, Seaford Heights requires further investigation and planning.
The Main South Road (Southern Expressway to Robinson Road) Planning Study for this section of Main South Road has been undertaken to understand local considerations and issues to inform the development of future upgrades. Currently, there is no funding commitment for detailed design and construction of this section.
The future upgrade of this section of Main South Road is part of a long-term plan for both current and future users of the corridor to:
- Enhance safety
- reduce congestion
- improve resilience and connectivity
- accommodate future growth in the broader southern region

What's happening
The Main South Road (Southern Expressway to Robinson Road) Planning Study has investigated potential options to improve safety, travel reliability, resilience and connectivity along this important corridor.
Community feedback and technical investigations have identified congestion, safety and network resilience as key considerations for future upgrades. Feedback also highlighted the importance of providing a smoother and more reliable journey between the Southern Expressway, Victor Harbor Road and Robinson Road. A range of potential improvement options have been assessed, including options within the existing corridor and alternative alignments outside the current road corridor. These investigations have helped identify a number of options for further consideration and progression.
Key constraints considered throughout the planning study include:
- High traffic volumes and the need to maintain network operations during construction.
- Access across the Onkaparinga River and the future role of the DV Fleming Bridge.
- Potential impacts on surrounding communities, businesses, the environmental and cultural heritage areas.
- Integration with existing infrastructure, including the Southern Expressway, Victor Harbor Road and Robinson Road.
The outcomes of the planning study will help inform future investment priorities for this section of Main South Road. There is currently no funding commitment for detailed design or construction.
Next Steps
The planning study identified a number of options that could improve travel times, reliability and network resilience along this section of Main South Road. While these options offer potential benefits, they would also require significant investment.
The Department will continue to investigate opportunities to improve network resilience, incident management and access across the Onkaparinga River, alongside future public transport improvements in the area.
There is currently no funding commitment for detailed design or construction. The outcomes of this study will help inform future planning and investment decisions.
Should any option progress to future stages of planning, further investigations, design development and community engagement would be undertaken, including consultation with local Aboriginal groups and Traditional Owners.
