Concrete pour for the Major's Road bridge widening

Works are in full swing at the new Majors Road Interchange. In late October 2024, the concrete pour for the new widened Majors Road bridge deck was successfully completed.

Majors Road bridge fast facts:

• Length of the bridge: 54.32 m
• Bridge span
  • Western side: 31.12 m
  • Eastern side: 23.2 m
• Widened Majors Road Bridge deck: 30.8 m

Majors Road bridge girders installation

In early September 2024, a benchmark milestone for the Majors Road Interchange project, 18 South Australian-made girders have been installed for the widening of the Majors Road bridge.

They will allow the existing Majors Road bridge to be widened from the current two lanes to six lanes, including two through lanes and a dedicated right turn lane, onto the Southern Expressway, in each direction.

Bridge girder fast facts:

• Ranging in length from 23 to 31 metres and each weighing between 8 and 14 tonnes – were installed over four-night shifts using a 300-tonne crane.
• The girders were constructed by local company, using 100 per cent regional South Australian labour.
• Each girder was transported almost 150 kilometres after their fabrication to the Majors Road worksite.

Community planting event

In late June 2024, community members came together for a planting event, including:

• Friends of Glenthorne
• Riding for the Disabled
• Department for Environment and Water
• our project team.

We planted 70 native tube-stock plants and trees within the Riding for the Disabled facility at Majors Road.

Once established, the vegetation will:

• increase tree canopy coverage
• enhance biodiversity in the local area.

Our project team also shared information about the project with local community groups.
