Mount Barker Interchange

The existing Mount Barker Interchange will be upgraded to include a new three-lane bridge across the Freeway for northbound traffic, the conversion of the existing bridge to accommodate three lanes of southbound traffic and a new shared use path, plus improved ramp capacity and new traffic signals to reduce congestion.

The Mount Barker Interchange has experienced 37 crashes between 2018 and 2022. 23 of these crashes involved casualties. Upgrading this interchange will improve capacity, traffic efficiency and commuter safety in the area.

Major construction is planned to start in 2025.

The key features include:

  • a new three lane bridge over the South Eastern Freeway for northbound traffic with a dedicated right turn lane for access to the freeway (towards Murray Bridge);
  • conversion of the existing bridge to accommodate three lanes of southbound traffic with a dedicated right turn lane for access to the freeway (towards Adelaide);
  • a new Shared Use Path incorporated onto the existing bridge and approaches, improving connectivity and safety for cyclists and pedestrians; and
  • upgrades to the existing ramps to and from Adelaide to improve safety and capacity.
