Smoother journey for Port Wakefield
Holiday makers returning to Adelaide after the long weekend safely travelled through the Port Wakefield Overpass and Highway Duplication Project with minimal disruption thanks to the project team’s effective traffic management.
In late March 2022 traffic was moved onto the newly constructed southbound lanes east of Port Wakefield, as well as the opening of a dedicated service lane for southbound traffic to access the service stations and bakery.
More recently, two southbound and two northbound lanes have opened south of the Port Wakefield township in their permanent configuration.
Quick response for Marine
Recently, Marine Safety Officers Loi Anderson-Clough and Stephen Kusznir responded to a sunken vessel at the Port Pirie Wharf.
The team quickly deployed an absorbent boom to extend around the vessel using anchors and ropes to securely hold the boom in place.
This absorbent boom helped to ensure any release of pollutants from the stricken vessel would be captured and not impact the surrounding environment.
As the Control Agency for marine pollution response in the State’s coastal waters, Marine Services continue to pride themselves on minimising any potential marine environmental damage through their rapid and efficient response.
Service appreciation
The Department recently received a letter from the Commissioner of Police thanking our staff for their contribution to SAPOL’s COVID-19 Border Operations Program, which earlier this year won a Premier’s Excellence Award.
Staff involved with the program gathered this week to be acknowledged for their contribution, which the Commissioner described in his letter as a ‘major factor in the success of the program’.
Tram capacity in real time
Our tram network now has passenger counters with sensors that accurately count the number of people who get on and off a tram at a stop, allowing customers to see tram capacity in real time.
You’ll find simple green, amber or red graphics to indicate whether a tram is ‘not busy’, ‘busy’ or ‘very busy’ on the Adelaide Metro website (under Tram/Timetables/Stops) and on digital signs at major tram stops.
The team at SAPTA, along with the Department’s Web team, Torrens Connect and Acorel (a leading specialist in passenger counting technology), have all worked extremely hard to implement this technology.
By having the tram capacity in real time, passengers can now make informed decisions as to whether they board the tram or wait for the next service.
Rail R U OK?Day
Thursday, 28 April 2022, is Rail R U OK?Day. A day which helps give thousands of rail workers around the nation the skills and knowledge to have conversations with workmates who may be struggling.
This year’s focus is on building confidence in rail workers to ask “R U OK?” and to keep the conversation going when someone says they’re not.
To find conversation tips visit the R U OK? website. A conversation could change a life.
Supporting small business
The Gawler Rail Electrification Project Alliance has been working closely with the Gawler Heritage Café to support its operation during the project’s delivery.
The café is located in the main building of the Gawler Train Station, providing coffee, bacon and egg sandwiches, cakes and more.
As trains are not currently servicing the station, the Project Alliance has assisted the small business during this time by providing graphic design services allowing the Café to have a new logo and signage as well as encouraging work crews to visit.
With train substitute and usual Adelaide Metro buses continuing to use the Gawler Heritage Station car park as a ‘Park and Ride’ location, directional signage was also provided to direct patrons to the Café.
Staff spotlight is on…
Gopi Nalluri has been with the Department for 16 years, working in various roles in the areas of Traffic Information Management, Asset Maintenance, Track and Civil, and Planning and Design.
Currently, he works as a Transport Planner in Transport Project Planning which involves defining and planning road infrastructure projects, including working with the Commonwealth Government to source and manage road infrastructure funding revenue for the State.
Gopi enjoys the challenge this role brings, requiring a lot of risk management and critical thinking about how we could do things better. He said that his job is not just about building roads, it’s also about balancing community needs and achieving overall good outcomes for the State and local communities.
Friday Flashback
Today’s Friday Flashback shows Adelaide Arcade in 1963, with some very retro looking cars in the foreground. Adelaide Arcade was built in 1885.
