Speed limits to be reduced on Tapleys Hill Road
Friday, 17 May 2024
Drivers travelling along Tapleys Hill Road will have a safer commute thanks to a reduced speed limit following concerns raised by the local community.
The State Government is reducing the speed limit on Tapleys Hill Road between Africaine Road and Sir Donald Bradman Drive from 80 km/h to 60 km/h, which will enhance safety for road users, local residents and businesses.
The busy thoroughfare is the main arterial route connecting Adelaide’s north and south with an average traffic volume of 50,000 vehicles a day, including 2,000 heavy vehicles. Between 2018 and 2022, there were 118 crashes were recorded, resulting in 42 injuries. Tragically, there have also been three fatalities along this section of road since 2003.
A speed limit review was conducted by the Department for Infrastructure and Transport and RAA following concerns raised by the local community and key stakeholders. The review found that a reduced speed limit would not impact motorists' overall travel time but would minimise the risk of death or serious injury in the event of a crash.
By reducing the speed limit, driver reaction times are improved, minimising the severity of crashes should they occur.
The review also found that vehicles were already travelling at 60 km/h during weekday morning and evening peaks.
Advance notice signage will be positioned along Tapleys Hill Road between Africaine Road and Sir Donald Bradman Drive to inform road users about the change.
The new speed limit will come into effect on Friday 31 May 2024. Motorists are asked to pay attention to the new speed limit signs indicating the change.
