Temporary fuel surcharge extension

From 29 June until 11:59 pm on 2 August 2026 (unless revoked earlier), taxi operators are permitted to apply a $2.00 surcharge to any journey undertaken by an access taxi service or country taxi vehicle designed or adapted to carry a wheelchair, scooter or other large (ride-on) mobility aid.

Only one surcharge can be applied per journey. The temporary surcharge aims to help operators cover ongoing increased fuel costs so they can continue to provide vital services to the community.

The fuel surcharge no longer applies to other taxi services.

Further information   regarding the application of the surcharge, is available at SA.GOV.AU - Taxi fares and charges.

Metropolitan taxi licence cancellation payments

In June 2026, the Department approved and paid the first round of metropolitan taxi licence cancellation payments, under the Prescribed Scheme (the Scheme).

Payments made in this first round were based on funding available for the Scheme in the 2025–26 financial year, which comes from:

  • the Point-to-Point Transport Service Transaction Levy; and
  • a portion of the Adelaide Airport Service Fee.

Applicants whose payments have been approved have been contacted directly in writing.

A further round of payments will be made in the 2026-27 financial year.

We understand that many applicants would like to know when their application will be approved and when payment will be made. Under the Scheme, applications are approved and payments are made over time, as funding becomes available.

Indexation will be applied to the payment amount each year, beginning with the 2027-28 financial year.

The Department will contact applicants to provide further updates regarding implementation of the Scheme, as future payment rounds are determined.
