River Murray Flood

Please hard refresh this page to ensure you are viewing the latest information.

The Department is continuing to undertake frequent road inspections and repairs to enable roads to safely reopen or any remaining speed restrictions to be lifted. The Department will ensure as much notice as possible can be provided about travel impacts for road and ferry users.

With most immediate repair works on State Government managed roads now complete, attention has now turned to longer term repairs and reconstruction activities. The Department continues to work closely with local councils, and emergency and essential services to ensure a coordinated approach to activities.

Planning to identify potential longer term works to improve the resilience of the impacted transport network has also commenced.

Recovery works

During the recovery works there may be:

  • changes to traffic conditions to keep everyone safe, including single lane with temporary traffic signals
  • speed restrictions during and outside of working hours
  • some noise and dust
  • odours, which is normal during asphalt work

Please review the individual works notices for more details on dates, hours of operation, locations, and specific changes.

Marine safety advice

All river users are reminded to take care and be aware that there is a flood event on the River Murray. This may make conditions dangerous for people undertaking activities on or near the water.

To protect infrastructure and the safety of river users and property, the South Australian State Emergency Services still has some restrictions in place that restrict activities and the use of the river.

For more information on the current directions in place, visit the State Government’s dedicated site.

All river users are reminded to take care and not swim, ride, walk or drive through flooded waterways.

Road closures

As of Wednesday, 8 March 2023, 11 of the 12 State Government-managed roads impacted by the River Murray flood event have been reopened to traffic either in full or with restrictions in place.

Hunter Road, west of Burdett Road, has sustained significant damage with multiple sections washed away to considerable depth. Immediate repair works are underway and expected to be completed in late March 2023. The Department thanks all road users for their patience and understanding while these important works are undertaken.

In the meantime, to provide Bolto and Cowirra residents access to their properties from Mannum, the Mannum upstream and downstream ferries are open to local light vehicle traffic (under 3 tonnes) and an additional passenger-only ferry service is running between Mannum and Cowirra. Both the Mannum ferries will be restored to full service, without weight restrictions, and the passenger-only ferry will stop operating once Hunter Road is re-opened.

To plan your journey and stay up to date with the latest real time traffic information (including road closures), visit Traffic SA.

Remember to always drive to the conditions and obey any speed restrictions and signage in place.

Ferry service impacts

All 12 ferries run by the Department for Infrastructure and Transport are now open, either in full or with restrictions.

Additionally, a free passenger-only service is currently running between Mannum and Cowirra, to provide Cowirra residents access to their properties from Mannum until access to Hunter Road is restored.

Use of the Wellington, Mannum Downstream and Mannum Upstream ferries are still restricted to light vehicles, emergency vehicles, road service vehicles and where relevant local school buses, due to weight requirements imposed on the ferries’ connector roads.

All other ferries are open without restrictions.
