Barrier Highway upgrades

We are undertaking upgrades to the Barrier Highway between Cockburn and Burra. These upgrades are funded by the Australian and South Australian governments (80:20) and will improve safety and freight efficiency and support regional economic growth.

Extending approximately 305km, this section of Barrier Highway passes through the townships of Olary, Yunta, Terowie, Hallett and Mount Bryan.

The Barrier Highway’s junctions with Main Street and Whyte Road, in Yunta and Whyte Yarcowie, respectively, will be upgraded to enable future provision for use by Performance Based Standards Level 3B heavy vehicles (up to 42-metre-long double road trains). This work is expected to commence in late 2025.

We are also completing safety upgrades on the Barrier Highway from Burra to Riverton as part of the $168 million Road Safety Program.
