Grange Road, Holbrooks Road and East Avenue Intersection Upgrade

About the project

The Department for Infrastructure and Transport is upgrading the intersection of Grange Road, Holbrooks Road and East Avenue to relieve congestion and improve safety and connectivity for all road users at this location.

The upgrade will remove a staggered intersection and create a direct connection across Grange Road between Holbrooks Road and East Avenue. This project, being delivered as part of an $850 million suite of projects is designed to ensure Adelaide’s road network functions efficiently during construction of the River Torrens to Darlington (T2D) Project, and once it has been completed.

Concept design

The concept design has been updated following community feedback in late 2023.

Key changes to the concept design include:

  • a dedicated left-turn lane from Grange Road onto Holbrooks Road, and
  • a new Pedestrian Actuated Crossing (PAC) on Grange Road between Hallett Boulevard and Coombe Road.

New Pedestrian Actuated Crossing (PAC)

The new PAC will improve pedestrian access for the community and contribute to improved safety when crossing Grange Road. It will be installed prior to commencement of major construction of the intersection upgrade works late 2024. The new PAC is jointly funded by the Australian and South Australian governments (50:50) as part of the National Road Safety Program.

Project timing

Over the coming months, early works will continue as part of the planning works. Localised demolition activities will also occur during this time to make room for the new road alignment. We will keep you up to date and nearby residents will be notified prior to any demolition activities commencing.

Major construction is anticipated to commence in early 2025, with the intersection expected to open to traffic in late 2025.

Latest news

To assist with project planning, ground investigation works will be undertaken in and around the intersection. To minimise the impact on road users, these works will occur at night, between Sunday 30 June and Monday 8 July 2024, weather permitting.

No works will be undertaken Friday and Saturday nights.

To do this work safely, temporary lane and speed restrictions will be in place during working hours. Please plan your trips, be cautious around workers and observe signage.

Refer to the works notice for more information.

Community engagement

Engagement with the community will continue to be an important part of the project during the planning and construction period.

We look forward to sharing the final design with you later in 2024, prior to commencing major works. Additional community information sessions will be scheduled at this time to share the final design and answer any questions about the project.
