Remote airstrip upgrades ready for take off
Thursday 15 January 2026
Close to $5 million will deliver critical safety upgrades at two regional South Australian aerodromes under the Remote Airstrip Upgrade Program.
The State Government will match the Federal Government’s funding 50:50 for infrastructure projects at William Creek and Streaky Bay, boosting aviation safety, accessibility and community connection.
The William Creek Airstrip apron will be extended as part of a $3.98 million upgrade to deliver smoother, safer patient transfers to the on-site Royal Flying Doctor Service (RFDS) Virtual Emergency Centre.
The RFDS lands at William Creek approximately 30 times a year to conduct fly-in community health clinics and airlift critically ill patients, with the nearest hospital more than 500 kilometres away.
The runway will also be repaired and resurfaced at the all-weather airstrip, which is a vital gateway for essential services and tourism in the state’s far north, supporting communities along the Oodnadatta Track.
Additionally, the South Australian Government will contribute $400,000 towards an $800,000 upgrade of the Streaky Bay Aerodrome, helping the District Council of Streaky Bay to reseal the runway, taxiway and apron.
These projects are among more than 40 initiatives nationally to secure funding under Round 11 the Remote Airstrip Upgrade Program.
The State Government offers funding to help upgrade vital aviation infrastructure and support the cost of yearly safety inspections. For more information, visit the website here.
