Freedom of information
The public has a right to access information held by government bodies. This is known as 'freedom of information' (FOI). This might include personal details, policy documents or administrative decisions.
The Freedom of Information Act 1991 helps make the South Australian Government more open and accountable. Under this Act, you have a legal right to get information held by most government agencies. However, some exemptions apply, such as privacy.
Our FOI information statement (PDF, 549.3 KB) aligns with subsection 9 (2) of the Act. It details:
- our Department's functions
- the types of information and documents we hold and how to access them
- how to ask to have a personal record amended if it is incomplete, incorrect, out of date or misleading.
FOI disclosure logs
Disclosure logs are records of non-personal information released from formal FOI requests. This helps you access information without making a new FOI request. This applies to requests received after 1 October 2017.
This information must meet certain conditions for public release. It must not:
- relate to someone's personal affairs
- be exempt under Schedule 1 of the Act
- be defamatory, break confidentiality or likely cause someone harm.
- FOI disclosure logs for our Department
Read information already released for FOI requests made to our Department.
- FOI disclosure logs for the Minister
Read information already released for FOI requests made to the Minister.

Make an FOI application
To access or amend documents under the Act, you must apply in writing.
You can do this in one of the following ways:
- Online: Visit SA.GOV.AU to make an FOI request.
- Email or post: Write to our Accredited Freedom of Information Officer (our contact details are below). To help you apply, visit State Records to download the FOI application form.
In your application, you may need to provide:
- details about the documents you want to access or amend
- your name, address and email
- proof of your identity
- credit card information (if you need to pay an application fee).
There is a fee for FOI requests. This fee may be waived, reduced or remitted upon request.
Request vehicle registration and licence details
You can get details about your personal vehicle or driver's licence. We encourage you to visit SA.GOV.AU to apply for registration and licence details through Service SA.
There is a fee for this service. This fee may be waived, reduced or remitted upon request.
For more information, contact Service SA.
Request a review or appeal
Internal review
If you are not satisfied with our decision about your FOI request, you can apply for an internal review.
To apply for an internal review, write to our Principal Officer (our contact details are below). To help you apply, download the FOI internal review application form (PDF, 119.1 KB).
You must also:
- include the application fee unless it was waived in the original FOI request
- submit your application within 30 days of being notified of the decision.
We will conduct the review and inform you of our decision within 14 days of receiving your request.
External review
You can also ask Ombudsman SA to conduct a free external review if:
- you were unable to apply for an internal review
- you are not satisfied with the decision from the internal review.
To do this, you must submit the review application to Ombudsman SA within 30 days of the decision date. Ombudsman SA can extend this time limit if they choose.
External appeal
If you are still not satisfied with the decision, you can appeal to the South Australian Civil and Administrative Tribunal (SACAT). SACAT can review decisions made by agencies or Ombudsman SA.
To do this, you must apply for an appeal to SACAT within 30 days of the decision date. SACAT will determine any costs, if applicable.
