The Denise Hatzi Memoriam Award is a unique opportunity for engineering students in South Australia.

This award recognises exceptional women or gender-diverse individuals in civil engineering. It offers a career pathway into civil engineering in the public sector through a paid placement.

Eligibility criteria

To apply for this award, you must be:

  • a female or gender-diverse student in your second or third year of a four-year civil engineering degree from Flinders University or Adelaide University
  • available for a placement between September and February (or as negotiated)
  • an Australian citizen, a permanent resident or eligible to work in Australia for the entire placement period.

Who we are looking for

We are looking for female or gender-diverse civil engineering university students who are:

  • team players ready to embrace our values and commitment to safety
  • analytical problem-solvers with great research skills
  • empathetic and culturally aware
  • skilled at building strong relationships
  • strong verbal and written communicators
  • driven, accountable and keen to use their initiative.

What you will receive

Award recipients will receive:

  • a paid internship placement
  • mentoring from one of our female or gender-diverse senior leaders
  • the opportunity to spend a day work-shadowing one of our senior leaders
  • priority consideration for our graduate program (subject to successful completion of the internship placement and their undergraduate degree).

The legacy behind the award

This award honours Denise Hatzi, a female civil engineer who worked with us for 23 years. She was part of many major infrastructure projects for South Australia.

Denise was a trailblazer for women in our Department and the wider industry. She was a strong advocate for equal outcomes for women, men and gender-diverse people.
