Regional review
Our state has an extensive regional public transport network, with services operating in 19 contracted regions.
The South Australian Government has committed to reviewing regional public transport services. The goal is to provide access to integrated, accessible and effective public transport services that meet local needs.
Our Regional Review is focused on identifying key needs and gaps in current services for regional communities. Our aim is to make sure regional residents can reach key destinations, including:
- health
- education
- employment
- social and recreational.
The first stage of improvements is now underway, with regional services integrated into the Adelaide Metro website to make travel easier across South Australia.
The review will recommend further improvements for our regional public transport network, helping ensure communities are well-serviced and connected.
What we know about public transport in our regions
We understand that public transport across each region is unique in the services on offer and the needs of the community. These are some key considerations for the review.
- Bus is the primary mode of public transport in regional areas.
- Bus services vary from region to region, with differing timetables and days of operation.
- The network is designed to connect residents to major service centres, educational institutions and key retail hubs, supporting access to essential services.
- The regional population landscape in South Australia is changing, with growth in some areas and an ageing population overall.
- Some people need to travel long distances to access vital services.
- Comfort and safety are important, particularly for buses travelling at higher speeds on open roads.
- Planning journeys can involve transfers between services and operators. Customers can now use the Adelaide Metro journey planner to help coordinate these trips more easily.
Plan your regional journey
Regional public transport services information is now available on the Adelaide Metro website.
This brings together regional and metropolitan services in one place, making it easier to plan trips within towns, between regions and into Adelaide.
Using the journey planner, you can:
* find routes between regional towns and centres
* plan connections between regional and metropolitan services
* view stop locations and service information
* access digital timetables for regional routes.
Regional public transport information is also available through third-party journey planning apps, such as Google Maps.
Fares, timetables and service updates for regional services continue to be managed by individual operators through their own websites and systems.
