Intern Program

We have an exciting internship program for university students who want to gain real life work experience. This is an opportunity to work with professionals who are supportive and committed to the future.

The Intern Program helps university students learn new skills, gain knowledge and develop personal qualities. It also gives them a way to start working in the public sector while they finish their degree.

We are currently looking for interns studying in the below fields:

Who we're looking for

Applicants must be university students in their second, third, or fourth year. They must be studying either Bachelor of Law or Bachelor of Business (Property) at a recognised university.

You'll need to be:

  • a team player ready to embrace our values and commitment to safety
  • a logical thinker who is good at solving problems and doing research
  • open-minded and shows respect to various cultures
  • a good communicator (both verbal and written) with strong relationship building skills
  • motivated, responsible and keen to take the initiative.

Recruitment process

To get into the internship program, you have to go through a selection process based on merit. Here's a summary.

Eligibility

To qualify for the Intern Program, you must meet the requirements listed below:

  • You are working to complete a bachelor's degree from a recognised university.
  • You are an Australian citizen, a permanent resident or have the right to work in Australia for a 12-month casual paid position up to 15 hours per week.
  • You are available to start the position between October and December 2024.
  • You need to do a National Police Check (NPC) before starting work at the Department, and must renew it every three years.
  • Before you start work in the South Australian public sector, you must fill out a pre-employment declaration.
  • Some positions may require a Department of Human Services Working with Children Check.
  • You have completed the application process in full.

Documents required:

  • résumé with contact details of two references (professional and/or character)
  • a cover letter (maximum two pages) addressing the following:
    • why would you like to work for DIT
    • any relevant work or volunteering experience.
    • an example of how you have built positive relationships and worked well with others in a group
    • an example of how you solved a problem, and explain how you researched to find the best solution
    • an example that demonstrates your skill in providing clear and brief communication with a wide group of people
  • South Australian Government pre-employment declaration
  • academic transcript (official or most recent)
  • proof of a valid visa, if you are not an Australian citizen or permanent resident. A Visa Entitlement Verification Online (VEVO) report can support your application. Note: some visas have restrictions on the total number of hours you can work per fortnight.

What we offer

All Intern Program participants get employed as an Administrative Service Officer Level 2 (ASO2). ASO2 equivalent is currently at $36.96 per hour + 11% super, with a rate increase expected in October 2024.

These are casual paid positions for 12 months, working up to 15 hours per week.

We also offer genuine flexible working arrangements that may support your study commitments. You will be able to discuss the options that best suit you at the interview and/or offer stage.

After you finish your tertiary qualification and do well in your role, you can gain a two-year contract and be part of our Graduate Program.

Job location

Roles are available in the Adelaide CBD.

Internship roles may also be available occasionally in regional locations. If the job requires you to work in a specific area, we'll discuss this with you about it at the interview or when we offer you the job.
