Safety in construction – our expectations and requirements
We know that prioritising worker safety is important because it:
- reduces injuries
- reduces project downtime
- improves profit and productivity.
As South Australia’s largest builder of public infrastructure, we aim to deliver all projects safely and without incident.
Setting minimum expectations and requirements for workplace health and safety (WHS) helps us all work towards zero harm to workers and the public.
Minimum safety expectations
Our minimum safety expectations specify our expectations for worker health and safety on all our worksites. They do not diminish or replace any responsibilities, duties and requirements under the:
- Workplace Health and Safety Act 2012 and Work Health and Safety Regulations 2012
- South Australian Codes of Practice
- Australian Standards.
We encourage organisations to put in place even higher levels of safety practices.

Minimum requirements for managing WHS
When we send you any Request for Tender documents, we will specify the minimum requirements for managing WHS.
For contractors, this means having systems, plans and processes in place that meet the requirements of the Work Health and Safety Act 2012 (SA). These must include measures for the public, site visitors, our employees and your own employees. They must be based on a recognised standard, such as ISO 45001.
There are different requirements based on the category of the contract. To get the requirements for each category, read Information and Documents for Contractors: Work Health and Safety.
Supporting activities
When we engage contractors to deliver our projects, we use a range of activities to monitor how they are meeting their WHS obligations.
These include:
- safety walks
- engaging external safety auditors and construction risk services
- our safety inspections
- Fresh Eyes safety coaching
- safety performance monitoring
- safety alerts.
For the key aims and deliverables of each activity, read the WHS auditing, coaching, monitoring and surveillance guide (PDF, 1.1 MB).
