Autism Strategy Action Plan

Our Autism Strategy Action Plan is part of our Disability Access and Inclusion Plan and supports the SA Autism Strategy.

The plan outlines how we will deliver the actions assigned to our agency. We are responsible for 16 actions and share 22 more actions with all state government agencies.

Our commitments cover 4 of the 7 focus areas in the strategy. This plan reports on those commitments and actions:

Our action plan commitments

The SA Autism Strategy 2025 to 2029 supports inclusion for Autistic people, their families and carers in South Australia. The SA Autism Strategy Action Plan 2025 to 2029 sets out the steps that the state government will take to fulfil these commitments.

We continue to work with industry, other state government agencies and the community to provide safe, accessible and inclusive services. See a list of our current initiatives:

  • Quiet hours at Service SA centres on Saturdays from 4 pm to 5 pm.
  • Working with the Office for Autism to update building codes.
  • Public Transport SA's partnership with the Office for Autism to provide sensory buses.
  • Public Transport SA's partnership with community organisations to offer the Try Before You Ride program. It uses virtual reality technology to help people experience public transport before they travel.
  • The Disability Parking Reform project, which was completed in 2025 after consultation with key stakeholders. Visit SA.GOV.AU to learn about using a disability parking permit.

Focus area 1: Pathways to diagnosis

Objective: We want to create a clear and equitable approach to diagnosis in South Australia.

Commitment 1

Create clearer and more consistent pathways to diagnosis for Autistic people of all ages.

Raise public awareness regarding diagnostic pathways and ensure all information and resources are accessible and easy to navigate
Action 1

Develop and promote information, where appropriate, on autism to assist people and their families to access services. For example:

  • assessment and diagnostic services
  • counselling and support following a diagnosis
  • autism and disability-specific information
  • supports for parents with disability, including autism.

Focus area 3: Thriving in the workplace

Establish a Carers and Parents network within our Community of Practice employee groups to provide support to employees who are carers of Autistic people.

    Improve the standardisation of autism inclusion in infrastructure projects

    Collaborate to develop autism-inclusive guidelines that are available publicly to ensure the needs of Autistic people are being met throughout the planning, development and management of new infrastructure projects.

    Investigate the introduction of seats on public transport that show not all disabilities are visible and the availability of badges that public transport users can wear to help promote understanding of hidden disabilities to other passengers that the individual may require additional support or consideration.
