Cheaper student fares save families millions
Thursday 25 June 2026
More than five million trips have been made using the Student 28-Day pass since the State Government slashed its price to $10 in 2025, saving students and their families nearly $2.5 million.
Adelaide Metro data has also revealed that the heavily discounted pass – equivalent to 25 cents per trip – has led to more primary and secondary students catching the bus, train or tram, making the school run easier for even more families.
Since the measure took effect on 1 July last year, trips using the pass have more than doubled, while total student travel across the public transport network has grown by nearly nine per cent.
The Student 28-Day pass had previously been nearly three times dearer, costing students and their families $28.60.
It has also been made even easier to access, with 28-day options added to the Adelaide Metro Buy & Go app in October 2025.
To save time, customers can pre-purchase and store their Buy & Go tickets in the app’s digital wallet and use them when they are ready. Stored tickets that are not used will expire after 12 months.
More than 31,000 single trip student tickets were sold through the Buy & Go app in May 2026, with customers reminded their passes can also be purchased through the app, making them cheaper in the long run.
The Adelaide Metro Buy & Go app is free to download and allows customers to choose from a range of ticket types.
