River Murray flood update: Waikerie and Tailem Bend ferries

Monday, 9 January 2023

The Department for Infrastructure and Transport advises that Waikerie Ferry services have now resumed, while the Tailem Bend Ferry is temporarily closed due to high winds.

Waikerie Ferry

Waikerie Ferry services recommenced at the high ramp at 12:30pm today, after water depths fell below 12 metres.

Additionally, an inspection earlier today showed water on Taylorville Road (the ferry access road) has also receded, allowing the road to re-open and ferry services to resume.

Use of this ferry is limited to light vehicles, school buses, emergency vehicles, and heavy vehicles up to 19 metres in length and less than 42.5 tonnes. B-Doubles are not permitted.

Tailem Bend Ferry

The Tailem Bend Ferry is temporarily closed due to high winds in the area and will re-open when conditions ease.

An alternative river crossing is available at the Swanport Bridge (upstream).

This ferry also continues to be at risk of flood-related closure in the coming days due to potential for the road access to this ferry to close as rising water levels reach the area.

The Department is continuing to closely monitor water levels to keep ferries operating for as long as possible, however some closures may be necessary at short notice as conditions change.

Cadell and Narrung ferries remain operational.

As water levels fall along the river, previously closed ferry services are expected to progressively resume as soon as it is safe to do so. This includes conducting any necessary repairs or adjustments to ferry and road infrastructure to ensure services can safely operate.
