Works begin on Port Lincoln intersection upgrades
Tuesday, 20 February 2024
Intersection upgrades and the next stage of pavement renewal works along the main street of Port Lincoln are underway, aimed at improving road safety and amenity in the town centre.
Four intersections along Lincoln Highway – the key road link between Port Lincoln and Port Augusta – will be upgraded, with works starting today on two intersections at Flinders Highway/Light Street and New West Road/Lewis Street.
Works on the remaining two intersections, at Hallett Place/Liverpool Street and Mortlock Terrace/Blight Street, are set to start next month – with all four upgrades expected to be completed mid-year, weather permitting.
The upgrades are designed to improve the dual function of the Lincoln Highway as a main street and vital freight route, providing a safer and more accessible stretch for motorists, cyclists and pedestrians while supporting regional economic growth.
The project will result in a typical roundabout layout at the four intersections, removing left turn slip lanes and creating single lane entries and exits where possible to help all users safely navigate the busy thoroughfare and destination.
These areas will be replaced with new kerbing and footpaths to allow more room and visibility for pedestrians – in addition to pedestrian refuges being installed at each intersection to further improve safety and reduce the pedestrian crossing distance.
The changes follow extensive public consultation which identified pedestrian safety as the number one issue and clear need to reduce the risk of a serious crash.
Pavement upgrades, new landscaped areas and garden beds, and better lighting are also planned on the highway, including car parking bays, delivered in partnership with the City of Port Lincoln to better connect local communities.
These works form part of a $51.25 million commitment, jointly funded by the Australian and South Australian governments on an 80:20 basis, to deliver Eyre Peninsula road upgrades under the Roads of Strategic Importance (ROSI) program.
The current upgrades follow completion of the first stage of pavement renewal works on Liverpool Street, Porter Street, London Street and the Lebrun Street in April 2023, which included a new asphalt road surface and new pavement marking installation.
As the project is rolled out, speed and lane restrictions will be in place during work hours. Some local side street detours may be required and advance warning will be provided via onsite signage, with emergency vehicle access maintained at all times.
Road users are asked to plan ahead, expect delays, allow extra travel time, observe speed limits and take extra care when workers are on site.
