Adelaide Regional Rail Extensions Planning Study
Background
We are undertaking a program of planning studies to investigate opportunities to further develop and extend the existing Adelaide Metropolitan Passenger Rail Network. The studies will focus on opportunities for the extension of public transport services to identified growth areas in Greater Adelaide and targeted regional centres.
Project scope
The planning studies will investigate how the existing Adelaide Metropolitan Passenger Rail Network could be extended to provide new links to identified growth areas. Connectivity of the network into the Adelaide CBD and the Adelaide Railway Station will also be considered as part of the planning study.
The planning studies will look at a number of locations for metropolitan extensions including:
- Concordia
- Dry Creek, Riverlea, Virginia & Two Wells
- Roseworthy
- Aldinga and Sellicks Beach (using the preserved Aldinga Rail Extension corridor).
We will also investigate the feasibility of providing passenger rail services to selected regional cities and townships.
Rail corridors
The South Australian Government is working to secure and preserve two of these rail corridors from the city – one south towards Aldinga and Sellicks Beach and one north towards Roseworthy and Concordia. This will allow for more mass transit options for our outer southern suburbs, which the Greater Adelaide Regional Plan (GARP) forecasts to grow by 23,000 homes, and the northern outer suburbs, expected to grow by 82,000 homes.
The Department’s Transport Strategy outlines a 30-year vision to transform how people and goods are moved around the state. It guides the development of a transport network that provides safe and affordable options and identifies future transport corridors that will support new housing and economic development.

Next steps
At this early stage we are analysing the feedback from the community and stakeholders from the recent Transport Studies in these areas including the Northern Adelaide Transport Study, Mount Barker and Adelaide Hills Transport Study and the Fleurieu Peninsula and Kangaroo Island Transport Study.
We will also use feedback obtained from the State’s Transport Strategy consultation and the upcoming Public Transport Strategy. This information along with technical data will be used to identify opportunities to inform a business case.
