About this document

This Ministerial Building Standard (MBS 004) sets out swimming pool safety features to prevent drowning or injury to young children by restricting access to swimming pools.

lt requires safety features such as barriers and suitable self-locking gates or doors to be installed and regularly maintained. The swimming pool must also comply when a property is sold or leased.

Ministerial Building Standards form part of the Building Rules which are used to assess a development application for building consent. All standards must be read in conjunction with the requirements of the Planning, Development and Infrastructure (General) Regulations 2017.
