Mobile Phone Detection Camera Trial

Following a State Government tender process, two potential mobile phone detection camera providers were shortlisted to supply cameras and related technology to South Australia for the trial.

Purpose of the trial

The trial allowed South Australia Police (SAPOL) and the Department for Infrastructure and Transport (DIT) to assess the solutions by two providers.

The assessment included:

  • how the cameras performed on a variable message sign (VMS) on South Australian roads.
  • daily monitoring of camera data by the project team
  • monitoring the quality and deliverables of both providers against key performance indicators.

Trial period

The trial started on 20 March 2023 and ran until late April 2023.

Trial locations

The trial took place on the west side of South Road, Torrensville. The camera equipment was mounted on the VMS near the corner of Ashley Street.

Penalties during the trial

During the trial, motorists who used their mobile phones illegally while driving were photographed by the cameras. These motorists were not fined and did not receive demerit points for the offence.

Motorists were reminded:

  • of the risks associated with illegally using a mobile phone while driving
  • to always ensure compliance with the road rules.

Protecting driver privacy

All data and images generated through the trial were properly managed and protected in accordance with SAPOL's operating procedures.

Cost

There was no cost to run the trial. The trial was part of the tender submission process and was paid for by the prospective providers.

Next steps following the trial

A review of outcomes of the trial and a recommendation for a preferred provider took place towards the end of 2023.

In January 2024 following a competitive tender process, Acusensus was awarded the contract as the preferred provider to supply and install mobile phone detection cameras in South Australia.
