Public Transport
Based on crash exposure risk, using public transport is safer than any other form of travel.
The South Australian Government encourages greater use of shared transport modes. Shared transport modes are a sustainable and an integrated transport alternative to cars. Interchange and Park ‘n’ Ride facility upgrades continue to be delivered across Adelaide metropolitan areas. For more information, visit the Department for Infrastructure and Transport's public transport projects.
Public transport can help older road users to maintain mobility and access services without needing to drive a car, especially in metropolitan areas. South Australian Seniors Card holders can travel for free on Adelaide Metro buses, trains, and trams. They can do this any time and every day. All they need to do is tap their Seniors Card when they board a service or pass through barrier gates.
Adelaide Metro is Adelaide’s public transport system comprising buses, trains, and trams. The website includes information about trip planning, accessibility, routes and ticketing. Adelaide Metro's tap-and-pay system is an easy way to pay using smart validators. It is currently available on all trams and buses and will become available on all trains by mid-late 2025.
Several private transport providers also run bus services in regions outside the Adelaide metropolitan network.
