Categories for temporary traffic management
The type of road determines the measures we use for temporary traffic management. We classify roads into temporary traffic management categories using the Austroads Guide to Temporary Traffic Management, Part 8: Temporary Traffic Management Categories and the National Training Framework.
This is done based on a road's complexity and safety risks. It ensures the traffic management practices we use match the specific environment.
The chart below explains the different road categories for temporary traffic management. It shows how safety requirements increase as higher traffic volumes and speed limits.

If a South Australian Government road is not marked on the maps, please consider them as Category 2 roads.
Category 3 only applies to either:
- expressway-type roads
- roads with mostly grade-separated intersections.
