Road Safety Program
We are delivering critical road safety upgrades and improvements on remote, regional, urban roads, footpaths and cycle paths around South Australia. The $168 million program is jointly funded by the Australian (50%) and South Australian (50%) governments over three years.
Works on regional roads and highways will include road resurfacing, curve and road widening, shoulder sealing, safety barrier installation and audio-tactile line marking (ATLM).
The upgrades may include:
- Road resurfacing - to improve the surface and quality of the road for all road users;
- Shoulder sealing - to provide a greater sealed road width and allow more opportunity for a vehicle to recover safely if it moves from the travelling lane;
- Safety barrier installation - to protect drivers from road side hazards in the event of run-off road type crashes;
- Road and curve widening - to improve safety for all road users and access for heavy vehicles;
- Audio tactile line marking (ATLM) – to reduce the likelihood of run off road crashes by alerting drivers when they are drifting out of their lane; and
- Footpath and cycle path upgrades - to enhance safety and connectivity for pedestrians and cyclists.
These upgrades will deliver improvements to freight movements, support regional economic growth and improved safety for all road users.
Cycling and Pedestrian improvements
As part of the program $37 million has been allocated for improvements to footpaths, cycleways and a number of new and upgraded Bicycle and Pedestrian Actuated (push-button) Crossings. For more information on these works, please visit our Cycling and Pedestrian Improvements page.
