Temporary weekend Belair line closures to undertake rock slip remediation work

Tuesday, 1 August 2023

There will be temporary closures on the Belair rail line on two weekends in August 2023, for maintenance work following rock slips caused by extreme wet weather, with substitute buses replacing all impacted train services.

The closures will be undertaken on the following weekends:

  • 12-13 August 2023 – part-line closure between Mitcham and Belair stations.
  • 19-20 August 2023 – full-line closure between Adelaide and Belair stations.

These closures are to allow remediation works following rock slips on the line near Coromandel Valley in June 2023, along with other maintenance activities.

The work to be undertaken includes construction of a new catch wall at the bottom of the embankment near the Coromandel Parade bridge, signal upgrades, Sleeps Hill tunnel maintenance, along with SA Water sewer main and pit maintenance within the rail corridor.

The works cannot be safely undertaken with trains operating in the rail corridor, and have been scheduled on weekends to minimise disruption to commuters, as much as practically possible.

The partial closure of the rail line between Mitcham and Belair stations on Saturday, 12 to Sunday, 13 August 2023 will impact all scheduled train services, with substitute buses to be in place. Rail services between Adelaide and Mitcham stations will be unaffected.

The full line closure between Adelaide and Belair on the weekend of 19-20 August 2023, will also require the cancellation of some services on the evening of Friday 18 August 2023, to allow safe access to the worksite.

The last service from Adelaide to Belair will depart at 8.21pm, while the final service from Belair to Adelaide will depart at 9.13pm. Services will resume as normal from first service on Monday, 21 August 2023.

Substitute buses will operate between Adelaide and Belair stations.

Bikes will not be permitted on Adelaide Metro substitute buses during these closures.

The works on 19-20 August 2023, coincide with a closure of the freight rail line by the Australian Rail Track Corporation to allow safer access to the rail corridor.

The temporary closures coincide with two AFL matches at Adelaide Oval, on Sunday 13 August 2023 and Saturday 19 August 2023. Additional substitute buses will be in place before and after these games to cater for patrons travelling to and from Adelaide Oval.

Adelaide Metro apologises for the inconvenience to customers while these important works are undertaken.
