Adelaide Road and Hawthorn Road Intersection Upgrade
About the project
The South Australian Government is upgrading the Adelaide Road and Hawthorn Road intersection in Mount Barker to improve traffic flow, safety and access for all road users.
As part of the 2026 State Election, the State Government committed $80 million to fix this busy intersection, which plays a key role in supporting Mount Barker’s growing community.
The project will deliver traffic signals, safer turning movements and improved pedestrian facilities, helping people move through the area more efficiently and safely.
What the project includes
The Adelaide Road and Hawthorn Road intersection upgrade will include:
- Installation of traffic signals
- New turn lanes to improve traffic flow
- Indented bus stops to reduce delays for through traffic
- Improved pedestrian crossing facilities across Adelaide Road
- Road and intersection improvements to support future traffic growth
What's happening
The next phase of the project will involve site investigations to help inform the planning and design of the intersection upgrade. These investigations may include surveying, traffic assessments and other technical studies.

- The $150 million South Eastern Freeway interchange upgrades at Verdun and Mount Barker (currently under construction)
