About the project
Kangaroo Island and the Fleurieu Peninsula are key destinations for visitors and tourism. They include important freight and transport routes for tourism and South Australian produce, like dairy, livestock and wine.
State critical infrastructure upgrade works on the Cape Jervis and Kangaroo Island Ports are now complete. Significant structural improvements have been made including the installation of new concrete footings and upgraded berthing and mooring structures, designed to support a 100-year service life.
The upgraded ports now feature new fit-for-purpose facilities which will facilitate an increased number of ferry services, faster turnaround times and improved safety for the new vessels and passengers, particularly during adverse weather and storms.
Throughout the remainder of 2025 and into 2026, a number of additional activities will be undertaken by SeaLink at both Cape Jervis and Penneshaw. For information on these works or about the new ferries please visit www.sealink.com.au/kifs
What's happening
Upgrades to the Penneshaw and Cape Jervis include:
improved berthing areas
more navigational equipment
better passenger amenities
catering for the new, larger SeaLink ferries
upgrading the Penneshaw Public Jetty.
Temporary cruise ship access at Penneshaw
We have been working closely with the Kangaroo Island Tourism Alliance and South Australian Tourism Commission to ensure cruise ship tenders have continued to berth safely at Penneshaw during the project.
When cruise ships return in late October 2025 the tenders will continue to berth at the temporary berthing pontoon as they did last season. The accessible concrete footpath and handrail, installed along the breakwater to allow passengers to disembark and access the harbour precinct safely will remain in place.
