Bike n Ride network grows as active travel investment continues

Since 2022, the State Government has continued to prioritise active travel infrastructure, including secure bike cages that make it easier for people to cycle to stations and interchanges and connect with public transport as part of an integrated transport network.

A new secure bike cage has recently opened at Woodville Railway Station with one at Mawson Interchange expected to open later this month, expanding Adelaide Metro’s bike ‘n’ ride network to 21 facilities with about 500 parking spaces.

Bike cages provide free, enclosed storage for cyclists and personal mobility device riders to park and continue their journey by train, tram or bus. The cages include security features such as CCTV monitoring and interior bike rails.

Passengers can access the bike cages using a registered metroCARD with bike cage access enabled.

Adelaide Metro is also progressing concept designs for additional locations across the network to support growing demand for active travel and public transport connections.

The latest expansion builds on existing facilities delivered at stations and interchanges over the last four years including Salisbury, Smithfield, Golden Grove, and Old Reynella.

Research undertaken to inform the South Australian Transport Strategy found 44 per cent of South Australians want to cycle and walk more often, highlighting the importance of providing safe and convenient transport options.

With more than 205,000 journeys taken on Adelaide Metro services each weekday, these upgrades will give even more passengers the opportunity to combine cycling and public transport as part of their commute.
