Road safety upgrades continue throughout the Adelaide Hills
Tuesday 18 August 2026
Safety improvements are continuing throughout the Adelaide Hills as part of a package of works that is delivering upgrades to some of the region’s key strategic arterial roads.
The $150 million Adelaide Hills Productivity and Road Safety Package is jointly funded with $120 million from the Federal Government and $30 million from the State Government.
The Package includes a range of road improvements to support economic growth, improve road safety, and increase fire resilience in the Adelaide Hills area.
North East and Torrens Valley Road
Safety upgrades on North East Road and Torrens Valley Road between Houghton and Gumeracha are now complete. These upgrades aim to improve road safety and driveability for road users.
Key treatments include a new road surface, road and curve widening, new safety barriers with motorcycle protection, new signage, and new line marking including audio tactile line marking (ATLM).
ATLM is used to reduce ‘run-off-road’ or cross carriageway crashes by creating a noise (audio) and vibratory (tactile) warning to road users who have strayed from the road lane.
Junction of Jones Road and Junction Road, Balhannah
Upgrades at the junction of Junction Road and Jones Road in Balhannah were completed in April 2026. These safety improvements aim to reduce the risk of accidents by enhancing clarity on traffic direction and improving manoeuvrability at, and around the junction.
The enhancements include upgraded lighting, new line marking, shoulder widening and new signage including a new stop sign.
Onkaparinga Valley Road, Nairne Road, and Junction Road intersection upgrade, Balhannah
The new single-lane roundabout at the intersection of Onkaparinga Valley Road, Nairne Road, and Junction Road in Balhannah was completed in April 2026, increasing safety and access, and improving traffic flow and pedestrian connectivity.
The intersection upgrade includes new pedestrian refuges and access ramps, upgraded lighting, new line marking, and new asphalt, kerb and guttering.
Kangarilla Road between Clarendon and Kangarilla
Road safety upgrades are continuing on Kangarilla Road between Clarendon and Kangarilla, with a new road surface and safety barriers, road widening, new signage, new ATLM and a culvert extension for better drainage. Works are expected to be completed in late 2026.

A new roundabout will improve safety and traffic efficiency, deliver new and upgraded pedestrian and cyclist crossings and improve functionality and access for heavy vehicles.
