Key intersection in Adelaide's west to be upgraded through T2D network package
Thursday 16 July 2026
A busy western suburbs intersection will receive a major upgrade, with designs revealed for the works set to be delivered through an $850 million package as part of the River Torrens to Darlington (T2D) project.

Early works will commence in Keswick later this month for the upgrade of the Richmond Road, Railway Terrace and Croydon Road intersection, which will improve travel between the city and South Road.
The more than $70 million jointly funded project will improve travel between the city and South Road. It will also provide better access to local shops, including the nearby Mile End Homemaker Centre, as well as the SA Athletics Stadium and Netball SA Stadium.
Forming part of a broader series of ongoing or already completed road network improvements, this project complements the works currently underway to deliver a non-stop South Road.
About 36,000 vehicles currently travel through this major intersection each day and increasing its capacity is crucial with Richmond Road’s positioning along the T2D motorway between the northern and southern tunnels.
Key features of the upgrade include:
- widening the intersection to accommodate new dedicated right and left turn lanes onto Railway Terrace (northbound) and two dedicated through lanes for travel in both directions
- widening Railway Terrace, with dedicated left turn (eastbound) and right turn (westbound) lanes onto Richmond Road
- extending right turn slip lanes on Ashford and Hampton roads
- an extra lane on Richmond Road (westbound) between Railway Terrace and Keswick Creek to provide two lanes in each direction along the length of Richmond Road
- new dedicated bicycle lanes on all approaches to the intersection and on Richmond Road between Railway Terrace and Anzac Highway.
Other improvements include new pedestrian crossings, traffic signals, LED road lighting, line marking and drainage.
Main works are scheduled to begin in the second half of 2027 with completion expected by the end of 2028. The project will support 145 jobs during construction.
This timeline has been formed through careful planning to coordinate and sequence all works along Richmond and South roads as part of the T2D project.
The $850 million Broader Network Upgrades package sits within the $15.4 billion T2D project budget, funded equally by the Albanese and Malinauskas Labor Governments.
These network improvements include:
- the successful removal of a much-maligned dogleg at the intersection of Grange and Holbrooks Roads and East Avenue. Main works are complete and the intersection is open to traffic, with minor auxiliary works to be carried out over the coming weeks
- the recently completed upgrade of James Congdon and Sir Donald Bradman drives, which has improved traffic flow for citybound motorists through three new right turn lanes
- the recently completed Raglan Avenue, Edward Street and South Road, improving road safety was opened to traffic in April 2026 with minor finishing works to be concluded in the coming months.
The non-stop South Road will be delivered by 2031 and save travellers up to 40 minutes during peak hours.
