Smart technology trial to save commuters time and money
Friday 10 July 2026
The State Government has committed nearly half a million dollars for AI technology trials to explore new solutions for traffic and transport management.
The trials will have a focus on creating a safer, more efficient and responsive transport network.
If successful, the new technology will result in a quicker commute, saving motorists time and money by reducing their fuel consumption.
It can also boost the state’s productivity. According to data collected by the Traffic Management Centre, it costs the state’s economy more than $33,000 for every 5000 motorists that are forced to wait 20 minutes in the morning peak.
Funded through the Office for Artificial Intelligence’s $35 million AI Proof of Value program, there are five specific areas the new technology will be trialled.
- Accident Detection and Warning system – AI-based incident detection system, that uses the existing roadside CCTV cameras to automatically detect traffic crashes and alert Traffic Management Centre operators to improve incident response times.
- Adaptive Green Walk Signals – Typically, pedestrian green time is fixed at five seconds. This AI detection system will identify how many pedestrians are waiting to cross and increase the green walk signal duration.
- Clearance and Green Time reallocation - Develop an AI-based traffic monitoring and control system that detects queues and allows more green time at signalised intersections.
- Right Turn Overflow detection and Intervention - AI-based system that detects overflow queues in right turn lanes, which can lead to an increase in congestion.
- Cyclist detection and advanced demand - Use AI-powered system to detect cyclists and their direction of travel to improve safety.
These new trials complement the AI technology already implemented into the state’s transport network.
Smart cameras are operating at some of Adelaide’s busiest thoroughfares which see traffic signals automatically adjusted depending on traffic flow.
This technology is already having a positive impact with the number of collisions at the Heaslip Road exit from the Northern Expressway significantly reduced since the new software was installed.
