South Road traffic switch in Torrensville over March long weekend

Thursday 5 March 2026

A section of South Road in Torrensville will be moved onto a new alignment over the March long weekend as part of the River Torrens to Darlington (T2D) Project.

The change affects South Road between Ashley Street and the intersection of Ashwin Parade and West Thebarton Road.

This traffic switch is necessary to keep traffic on South Road moving while more construction continues.

Under the new alignment, north bound traffic on South Road will shift onto newly constructed lanes that curve slightly west when approaching the Brickworks Marketplace, before reconnecting with the existing roadway north of Ashwin Parade. Whilst the two new north bound lanes on South Road will feel very similar to drive along, there will be changes to the lane positions and line marking.

To support the traffic switch, West Thebarton Road will also be temporarily fully closed for essential service relocation works from 11pm Friday 6 March to 7am Tuesday 10 March 2026.

These works have been scheduled over the March long weekend to minimise disruption as much as practically possible, with lower traffic volumes expected during this period.

Once the traffic switch is in place, there will also be various turning restrictions at the intersection, including:

  • no right turn onto South Road from West Thebarton Road and Ashwin Parade during peak periods (7am to 10am and 2pm to 6pm, Monday to Friday)
  • heavy vehicles over 8.8 metres will not be permitted to turn right from West Thebarton Road at any time, with detours via Port Road in place
  • motorists travelling north along South Road will not be able to turn right onto West Thebarton Road at any time.

Motorists are encouraged to plan ahead, follow signage and allow for extra travel time, particularly during peak periods.

Once traffic has been switched onto the new lanes, the old north bound lanes of South Road will be closed and become part of theT2D construction site. This area will accommodate the Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM) launch box in the Northern Precinct.

The launch box is where the TBM constructing the Northern Tunnels will complete its north bound excavation before it is turned around to begin tunnelling south, back towards Sir Donald Bradman Drive, Hilton.
