Farmers on Kangaroo Island are set to benefit after the State Government secured a reduction to the cost of shipping livestock on SeaLink’s new ferries.

The operator had initially flagged the new service – slated to commence later this year – would bring with it increased freighting cost for livestock, with a multiplier of 1.5 applied to the base freight rate in line with dangerous goods.

In a win for Island agriculturalists, this multiplier has been cut to 1.2 – the same as general freight – following the State Government’s successful negotiations with SeaLink after it became apparent that the expected commencement date of the new service would not be met.

SeaLink has committed to commencing services with two new ferries by September this year.
