$7.2 million upgrade signals safer streets for Port Lincoln

A key Port Lincoln intersection has been upgraded, improving safety for motorists and pedestrians, and boosting freight efficiency through the nation’s seafood capital.
The $7.2 million investment to complete the Porter Street, Liverpool Street and Railway Place intersection has been equally funded by the Australian and South Australian governments through the Safer Local Roads Infrastructure Program.
The upgrade delivers a safer, more accessible road transport connection for the Eyre Peninsula, improving journeys while supporting a vital freight and grain corridor.
The project includes installing traffic signals and creating a pedestrian-actuated (push-button) crossing on all four approaches to the busy intersection, giving pedestrians greater protection and certainty when crossing.
Freight operators will also see benefits, with the upgrade enabling truck drivers to keep goods safely on the move thanks to more reliable travel times.
On average, approximately 10,300 vehicles travel through the intersection each day, including more than 1400 heavy vehicles.
Smoother, safer and more efficient travel was a key priority identified during community and stakeholder consultation in 2024, which informed the project scope and design.
New line-marking, kerbing, lighting and landscaping has also been completed as part of the upgrades.
Lincoln Highway, which leads into Liverpool Street, is a crucial link for drivers across the Eyre Peninsula, serving a dual purpose as a main street and freight route to the port via Porter Street and Railway Place.
