New overtaking lanes and upgraded rest areas for Sturt Highway
Wednesday, 12 October 2022
Construction of new overtaking lanes and upgraded rest areas as part of the Sturt Highway Upgrade will start this week.
The package of works includes new eastbound and westbound overtaking lanes near Stockyard Plains and a new eastbound overtaking lane east of Waikerie.
There will also be upgrades to the eastbound rest area at Stockyard Plains, and to the eastbound and westbound rest areas at Kingston-on-Murray.
The new overtaking lanes and upgraded rest areas are scheduled to open late 2023, weather permitting.
The works will improve safety and freight efficiency along the Sturt Highway and support regional economic growth.
They form part of the South Australian and Australian governments’ $87.5 million commitment to upgrade the Sturt Highway between Renmark and Gawler, as part of the Roads of Strategic Importance initiative.
The contract for these works has been awarded to Downer EDI Works Pty Ltd.
