Works commence on culvert upgrades on Princes Highway
Wednesday, 15 March 2023
Works continue as part of the ongoing effort to improve road safety and freight productivity on the Princes Highway, with upgrades to two culverts in the South East underway.
Works have commenced to replace both the culvert approximately 23 kilometres north-west of Millicent and the culvert located approximately 40 kilometres south-east of Kingston.
The culvert upgrades form part of the $190 million Princes Highway Corridor Upgrade program jointly funded by the Australian and South Australian governments on an 80:20 basis.
These works will allow for wider lane widths and will include new safety barriers to improve road safety, driving conditions and site reliability. The bridge barriers will also be extended along the approaches to the culverts.
The culvert upgrades will contribute to the section of the Princes Highway between Kingston and Millicent meeting the criteria for PBS Level 3A vehicles (double road trains up to 36.5 metres long), improving freight productivity and reliability.
Currently, this section is gazetted for PBS Level 2B vehicles (B-doubles between 26 metres and 30 metres long).
Works are being undertaken Monday to Friday, between 7am and 5pm. Advanced notice will be provided if works are required at night or during the weekends. These works are expected to be completed in June 2023, weather permitting.
To safely facilitate these works, temporary short diversion tracks will be in place at both locations to allow all traffic to bypass the project sites. Speed restrictions will also be in place throughout the work areas for the duration of the project.
Road users are asked to please plan, expect delays, allow extra travel time and take extra care when workers are on site. Observe speed limits, lane restrictions and traffic controllers when travelling through the area.
