Pavement rehabilitation and rest areas to be delivered on the Sturt Highway

Monday, 3 April 2023

Works are continuing as part of the $87.5 million Sturt Highway Corridor Upgrade, with new rest areas and pavement rehabilitation to be delivered between Annadale and Shea-Oak Log.

Pavement rehabilitation works will be undertaken at multiple locations on the Sturt Highway to improve road safety for all road users.

Works have commenced north-east of Nuriootpa and will be followed by works west of Truro and northeast of Gawler.

The pavement rehabilitation works are expected to be completed in June 2023, weather permitting.

Works will also commence in the second quarter of 2023 on new rest areas at Shea-Oak Log and Annadale and are expected to be completed by late 2023.

Further east, works will also be undertaken to upgrade an existing rest area on the Sturt Highway in Yamba, commencing in mid-April.

This work will include constructing a new deceleration lane heading into the eastern end of the rest area, shoulder widening, improved traffic controls, new signage, line marking, and pavement rehabilitation at the entrance and exit of the rest area.

As part of the pavement rehabilitation works, a speed restriction of 60km/h will be in place outside of working hours until project completion, subject to on site conditions.

Road users are asked to please plan ahead, expect delays, allow extra travel time and take extra care when workers are on site. Observe speed limits, lane restrictions and traffic controllers when travelling through the area.

The Australian and South Australian governments have committed $87.5 million on an 80:20 basis to upgrade the Sturt Highway, between Renmark and Gawler, as part of the Roads of Strategic Importance (ROSI) initiative.

ROSI is an initiative of the Australian Government which aims to deliver improvements to freight movements, support regional economic growth and connectivity, and improved safety for all road users.
