Green light for new and improved Adelaide intersections
Wednesday, 15 November 2023
Major construction work is substantially complete at the upgraded intersection of Glen Osmond Road and Fullarton Road in Adelaide’s east, with all lanes open to traffic.
The Australian and South Australian governments have jointly committed $35 million to the upgrade, with each contributing $17.5 million.
Construction involved widening Fullarton Road to provide an additional third dedicated through-traffic lane on each side through the intersection.
The project also widened Glen Osmond Road to provide an additional second dedicated right-turn lane onto Fullarton Road for northbound traffic, and delivered a longer right-turn lane for traffic turning onto Fullarton Road travelling southbound.
The right-turn lane on Fullarton Road into Glen Osmond Road heading towards the city was removed and traffic signals were installed at the junction of Glen Osmond Road and the realigned Main Avenue.
This major work was undertaken in consultation with the community with minor finishing works, including landscaping, to take place in the coming months.
Full completion of the project is expected late this year.
Meanwhile, further south along Fullarton Road, traffic is running smoothly on the completed Cross Road intersection.
The Australian and South Australian governments jointly funded the $61 million project, which has improved travel times and road safety, increased the intersection’s capacity and enhanced network reliability. Each Government provided $30.5 million.
Cross and Fullarton roads were widened and dedicated right-turn lanes were installed with three through lanes on both approaches, a dedicated left slip lane (northbound onto Fullarton Road and westbound onto Cross Road) and dual left-turning lanes into Fullarton Road, southbound.
A shared through and left-turn lane onto Cross Road travelling eastbound was also constructed.
The Cross Road bus stops were relocated and upgraded, pedestrian crossings within the intersection were upgraded and new and improved traffic signals, pavement, road lighting, line marking and drainage were also installed.
Work to reconstruct the Urrbrae Gatehouse at its new location within the Waite Arboretum continues, with construction expected to be complete in early 2024.
