Temporary closures on Outer Harbor and Gawler rail lines
Friday, 24 May 2024
Outer Harbor partial line closure
The Outer Harbor line will be partially closed from the first service Saturday, 1 June 2024 to last service Sunday, 2 June 2024, to undertake works as part of the Port Dock Railway Line Project.
Passengers are being encouraged to plan their trip in advance with train services not running between Woodville and Outer Harbor railway stations, with substitute buses operating. Trains will resume as normal from the first service on Monday, 3 June 2024.
Services on the Grange line will not be impacted by the weekend’s closure with trains still running as usual between Adelaide Railway Station and Grange Railway Station.
The closure will allow crews to safely undertake testing of the rail signalling system, track drainage and rail infrastructure works which cannot be undertaken with trains operating in the rail corridor.
The work is part of the $51 million Port Dock Railway Line Project which will re-establish the one kilometre spur line into the heart of Port Adelaide. During the weekend closure, track testing will also begin with the first train to travel along the spur line. This is in preparation for further testing and driver training ahead of the lines official opening later this year.
Substitute buses will service all stops between Outer Harbor Railway Station and Woodville Railway Station to connect passengers with train services.
These works were scheduled on the weekend to minimise impacts on weekday commuters heading to work or school.
Gawler full line closure
The Gawler rail line will temporarily close for maintenance and level crossing renewal works over the King’s Birthday long-weekend from 9pm Friday, 7 June 2024 to last service Monday, 10 June 2024.
The works include station and signalling maintenance, along with level crossing and infrastructure upgrades, which cannot be safely undertaken while trains are operating in the electrified rail corridor.
Substitute buses will operate during the temporary closure, servicing all stops between Adelaide Railway Station and Gawler Central Railway Station.
An extra bus stop will be in service near Gawler and Barossa Jockey Club to cater for racegoers travelling to and from the Barossa Cup on Monday.
During the full line closure, works will also occur at the Hawker Street, North Adelaide level crossing helping modernise and improve safety along this busy route.
Some detours and bus stop closures will be in place for motorists and Adelaide Metro bus routes.
The line closures have been carefully planned to minimise the impact on train passengers, nearby residents and road users but some delays are expected. Please allow extra time when travelling.
Passengers are encouraged to visit www.adelaidemetro.com.au to check their timetable in real time and plan their trip with the Adelaide Metro journey planner.
The Department apologises for the inconvenience and thanks commuters for their patience while these important works are undertaken.
