Safer highway from coast to coast

Thursday, 22 May 2025

Important upgrades have been completed on the Spencer Highway between Wallaroo and Moonta, improving safety for all drivers.

Sections of the highway have received shoulder sealing, and Audio Tactile Line Marking has been installed to alert drivers so they can recover quickly if they begin to veer-off the road or into the oncoming lane.

These treatments aim to further prevent crashes from occurring on the Spencer Highway following three reported incidents between 2019 and 2024 that resulted in injuries.

Around 1500 vehicles travel along this section of the highway each day with 150 of them being heavy vehicles.

The upgrade is part of a $10 million investment from the State Government’s $98 million road safety package and this project has supported 15 full-time jobs during the construction period.

In another boost for road safety on the Yorke Peninsula, major works have been completed on Upper Yorke Road between Kulpara and Arthurton, and Port Broughton and Bute where shoulder sealing, pavement rehabilitation and safety barrier installation were undertaken.

Those works form part of a $168 million commitment under the Road Safety Program, which is funded by the Australian and South Australian governments, contributing $84 million each.

Both programs of work form part of the South Australian Road Safety Action Plan 2024-26.
