Light poles to be replaced along North Terrace and King William Road
Thursday, 15 October 2020
Works will be undertaken to replace 38 light poles on King William Road and North Terrace along the Festival Plaza and Botanic tram lines to support overhead infrastructure as part of the City Tram Extension Project. The new poles will enhance the visual amenity of these important cultural precincts and allow the City of Adelaide to use them for major events.
The works schedule has been developed to minimise disruption to tram passengers, motorists and local businesses, with traders along North Terrace consulted about the program of works.
As part of the City Tram Extension Project, the overhead wiring system was attached to the existing light poles, which caused some to bend more than expected. Although they remain structurally sound, the poles have limited capacity to support additional loads such as signage or banners.
During project delivery, the Department for Infrastructure and Transport (the Department) made the assumption based on technical drawings that the poles could accommodate both tram infrastructure and council event signage.
On investigation after the wiring system was attached, it was clear the poles were aesthetically displeasing and restricted additional use by the City of Adelaide.
Following consultation with the City of Adelaide, the Department has agreed to replace the poles, to ensure they are structurally sound for decades to come and provide greater flexibility to activate the precinct for major events.
The cost to replace the light poles is included in the existing budget for the City Tram Extension Project.
These works have been planned to coincide with reduced traffic in the CBD and a reduction in public transport patronage due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
There are also no major events occurring at Adelaide Oval during the works.
Some speed and lane restrictions will be in place around the works. Please be patient and allow extra time when travelling through the area. Tram services on the Botanic line will not operate during the weekend works.
Access to businesses will be maintained and the community is encouraged to support local business.
The Department apologises for any inconvenience caused and thanks the community for their patience while these works are being carried out.
