Roadside Service Centres

We are seeking to establish Roadside Service Centres (RSC) along motorway and freeway corridors.

RSC help drivers take breaks when they recognise signs of fatigue. Centres with well-designed services and facilities can help improve travel safety and efficient movement of goods.

The RSC will have:

  • fuel and/or electric-charging facilities for vehicles
  • designated parking areas for heavy vehicles
  • amenities for heavy vehicle drivers
  • restaurant or other food outlets
  • services for rest.

We will partner with the private sector to develop these centres so that they meet the public's service and industry needs.

Project benefits

This project aims to:

  • improve road safety by offering necessary services and more rest opportunities for drivers
  • meet the Heavy Vehicle National Law requirements
  • provide innovative, efficient and environmentally sustainable services. This includes new infrastructure and technology, such as vehicle charging stations
  • promote economic development and create jobs during construction and ongoing operations
  • generate commercial returns to help reduce the state’s cost of maintaining freeways and motorways.

Corridor map

Major corridors of transit within South Australia are being considered, such as:

  • Port Wakefield Road
  • Port River Expressway
  • Northern Expressway
  • Northern Connector
  • South Eastern Freeway.

We will use technical data and stakeholder input to select specific locations of the RSCs. These locations will be finalised late in 2026 as part of the procurement process.
